Volunteering helped me break the habit

Dee

“After 30 years of not smoking, I never imagined I’d start again. But during menopause, I met a new partner who smoked, and before I knew it, I was sharing rolled cigarettes with him. I felt so frustrated with myself, especially when I quickly started getting coughs and colds. I didn’t even want to admit smoking might be the cause.

Since last February, I’d worked my way up to 30 cigarettes a day. Then I went to an event at Barnstaple Library and spoke to a lovely lady called Lisa, who put me in touch with Stop For Life. Within a few days, I had a call from Lucy, who gave me brilliant, practical ideas to help me quit.

One of the best things that came from that conversation was being signposted to a volunteer role with Green Paths CIC, supporting military families and children with SEN. It’s been such a rewarding experience. Being part of something positive, meeting inspiring people, and keeping busy has helped me cut down massively. I’ve hardly smoked since.

I’d encourage anyone to consider volunteering. It’s uplifting, purposeful, and for me, it’s played a huge part in breaking the habit. Thank you, Stop For Life.”
